Overview
Bone marrow biopsy is an important test and needed to make a diagnosis of ET[1] as per WHO definition. The bone marrow biopsy shows hypercellularity with clusters of megakaryocytes that stain positive for iron. There may be increased reticulin but no collagen fibrosis.

Bone marrow biopsy is an important test and needed to make a diagnosis of ET[1] as per WHO definition. The following changes may be seen on a bone marrow biopsy specimen:
- Increased cellularity
- Hyperplasia and clustering of megakaryocytes
- Bone marrow stains positive for iron
- Bone marrow reticulin may be increased with no collagen fibrosis
