Prognosis
The outcome is usually good with treatment, but poor without it.
It is reported that malignant disease accounts for about 10%–30% of cases of acute cholangitis
high mortality, ranging from 10% to 30% in the patients, with multiorgan failure as a major cause of death
The reported mortality of acute cholangitis varies from 2.5% to 65%26–37 (Table (Table4).4). The mortality rate before 1980 was 50%,26,27 and after 1980 it was 10%–30%.28–37 Such differences in mortality are probably attributable to differences in early diagnosis and improved supportive treatment.
