Classification

Mastitis can be classified according to several subtypes based on the etiology, duration of disease, anatomical location and age of patient as follows:

Puerperal vs. Nonpuerperal Mastitis

This classification is important when counseling patients on prevention.

Granulomatous Vs. non-granulomatous

Granulomatous mastitis although rare is a benign and chronic disease of the breast. This classification is especially important because of its unique therapeutic approach.

Pre-pubertal Mastitis

This helps in making treatment decisions.
