Overview
The exact prevalence of infectious colitis worldwide is unknown. However, it is estimated that 2 to 4 billion episodes of infectious diarrhea (including infectious colitis) occur annually with the largest burden in developing countries. Enteric bacteria are the most common pathogens causing infectious colitis. The highest morbidity and mortality from infectious colitis is in children under the age of five years.[1][2][3][4][5]
Epidemiology and Demographics
The exact worldwide incidence and prevalence of infectious colitis is not fully known, especially in developing countries which have the highest burden of diarrhea disease.
