The mainstay of therapy in infectious colitis is medical treatment. However, surgery may occasionally be required in the following situations:[1][2]
- Massive hemorrhage
- Perforation
- Peritonitis
- Fulminant infectious colitis
- Abscess
- Toxic megacolon
- Stricture
- Failure of medical therapy
