Epidemiology and demographics

Incidence:

• The incidence of Hirschsprung disease is 1 in 5000 newborn.
• The incidence is lower in the US (about 1 in 1500 newborn).

Race:

• Hirschsprung disease is three times more common in Asian Americans.

Gender:

• Males are more commonly affected with hirschsprung disease than females. The male to female ratio is approximately 4:1.
• With total aganglionic colon, male to female ratio is 1:1.
