Overview
There are certain features which if present in a patient complaining of diarrhea for over 4 weeks require further evaluation. Some of the screening modalities include, radiographic imaging studies[1], endoscopy/enteroscopy/capsule enteroscopy[2], histopathology of the small bowel and colon[3], bacteriology/microbiology[4], serological testing and chemical analysis of stool[5].
Screening
There are certain features which if present in a patient complaining of diarrhea for over 4 weeks require further evaluation. these include:
- Rectal bleeding[6]
- Weight loss
- Age > 50 years[7]
- Pain[8]
- Associated psychological factors
- Somatization[9]
- Dietary causes of diarrhea[1]
