Overview

In 1886, Fränkel made the first description of a patient with pheochromocytoma. In 1912, Ludwig Pick coined the term pheochromocytoma. In 1926, the first surgical removal of pheochromocytoma in the Military Medical Academy in Yugoslavia was performed by Professor Isidor Papo.

Historical Perspective

  • In 1563, Eustachius discovered and described the adrenal gland. He divided it into cortex and medulla.
  • In 1886, Paul Mannase described the chromaffin reaction. During the same year, Frankel first described a medullary adrenal tumor.
  • In 1912, Ludwig Pick coined the term pheochromocytoma.
  • In 1926, the first surgical removal of pheochromocytoma in the Military Medical Academy in Yugoslavia was performed by Professor Isidor Papo.
  • Significant research made by Dr. Wilder and his colleagues at Mayo's Clinic describing the symptoms and laboratory investigations.[1]
