Overview

The role for X-ray in thalassemia is limited. In some cases it can be useful to address a particular clinical question.

X-Ray

There is no particular role for x-ray in thalassemia. However, in patients who have received multiple transfusions, X-ray of the chest can be done to assess for fluid overload in the lungs. Pulmonary edema can be visualized as opacities in the pleural space on chest X-ray. In some cases, X-ray of the jaw can be done in patients with beta-thalassemia major (Cooley's anemia) to assess for bone breakdown.
