Complications
It can cause pneumomediastinum and/or mediastinitis (air or inflammation of the mediastinum) and sepsis.
Prognosis
Boerhaave's syndrome has a high mortality rate (14-40%).[1] With the exception of few case reports describing survival without surgery, the mortality rate of untreated Boerhaave syndrome is nearly 100%.[2]
