Overview
MRI is also helpful in accurately diagnosing horseshoe kidney, and is used in conditions where CT Scan is not recommended or available. MRI is also costlier than CT Scan.
MRI
MRI scan may be helpful in the diagnosis of horseshoe kidney. MRI scan accurately delineate:
- Degree and anatomical location of the horseshoe kidney
- degree of malrotation
- help differentiating the parenchymal from fibrous isthmus.
- showing the relation of the isthmus to surrounding structures.
- can detect accessory vasculature by using MR angiography
- evaluate associated renal parenchymal changes and collecting system abnormalities
- evaluating the extent of renal tumors associated with horseshoe kidney.
