Overview

Diarrhea is a common symptom in many childhood conditions.

Differential Diagnosis

  • Altered mental status - Central Nervous System infection, sepsis [1]
  • Bilious vomiting - bowel obstruction
  • Blood or mucus in the stool - inflammatory bowel disease
  • Shortness of breath - pneumonia
  • Fever (especially if with nausea and vomiting) - otitis media or urinary tract infection
  • Abdominal pain, rebound tenderness - appendicitis or other surgical causes
  • Neck stiffness - mengingitis
  • Rash- Toxic Shock syndrome
