The buccal index is a term used in different fields and is defined accordingly:
- In ultrasound diagnostics: The buccal index >20 mm was first introduced by E. E. Kortshagina as a marker for diabetic fetopathy. The buccal index <10 mm was first used as a marker for intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) by M. S. Walid.
- In dentistry: The cross-mounting buccal index was developed by N. Chaimattayompol for the definitive implant abutment selection, framework design and fabrication.
