Overview
The Adult Treatment Panel (ATP III) has adopted a classification for serum triglyceride levels. Elevated triglycerides are an independent risk factor for coronary heart diseases. It is commonly observed in persons with the metabolic syndrome, obesity, physical inactivity, cigarette smoking, excess alcohol intake, high-carbohydrate diets , type 2 diabetes, chronic renal failure, nephrotic syndrome, certain drugs like corticosteroids, estrogens, retinoids and genetic disorders (familial combined hyperlipidemia, familial hypertriglyceridemia, and familial dysbetalipoproteinemia).
