Overview
A CT scan of the head is an important diagnostic tool in cases of confusion where a cause couldn't be established. It is the preliminary test to perform, before doing a lumbar puncture, in cases of suspected infections like meningitis.
CT
This test is not done as part of routine evaluation for confusion. It is ordered when no significant cause is established.
- CT head has to be performed before proceeding to lumbar puncture.
- Ct head helps in identifying any lesions of the brain causing confusion like bleeds in the brain.
- Aids in identifying associated co morbid conditions of the brain.
- Needed when its tough to get history from patient and other causes cant be established.
- Ordered when patient is not responding to treatment.
- It is helpful in finding primary sites of the tumor in case of confusion caused by metastatic lesions of the brain.
