Overview

Paraganglioma may be classified into several subtypes based on site of origin and having a neural cell line.

Classification

According to the World Health Organization, paragangliomas are classified as having a neural cell line. In the categorization proposed by Wick, the paragangliomas belong to Group II.

Paragangliomas are also described by their site of origin and are often given special names:

• Carotid paragangliomas
• Glomus tympanicum and Glomus jugulare paragangliomas
• Vagal paragangliomas
• Other sites such as larynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, thyroid gland, thoracic inlet, as well as the bladder in extremely rare cases.
