Chronic mediastinitis was first described by Dr. Thomas T. Whipham, MD, a British physician, in 1899. In his article, he chronicles various examples of mediastinitis in patients, and concludes that the disease more frequently occurs in adults compared to children. Additionally, he claims the majority of patients are males by a ratio of 4:1. Dr. Whipham also claims that chronic mediastinitis possesses an undiscovered cause.
