Overview
The cause of primary myelodysplastic syndrome has not been identified. Common causes of secondary myelodysplastic syndrome include radiation, busulfan, nitrosourea, procarbazine, DNA topoisomerase inhibitors, acquired aplastic anemia, and Fanconi's anemia.[1]
Causes
Primary Myelodysplastic syndrome
Approximately 90% of MDS cases occur de novo with no identifiable cause.[1]
Secondary Myelodysplastic syndrome
Common causes of secondary myelodysplastic syndrome include:[1]
- Radiation
- Benzene
- Busulfan
- Nitrosourea
- Procarbazine
- DNA topoisomerase inhibitors
- Acquired aplastic anemia
