Overview
Toxoplasmosis is an opportunistic parasitic infection most commonly seen in AIDS and immunocompromised individuals. Its mostly asymtomatic in immunocompetent individuals. It can be classified into two categories based on the duration of symptoms and organ involvement.
Classification
Based on duration of symptoms
- Acute: If the duration of symptoms is less than 4-6 weeks
- Chronic: If the symptoms persist for more than 6 weeks.
Based on organ involved
- Neurotoxoplasmosis (cerebral toxoplasmosis)
- Pulmonary toxoplasmosis
- Occular toxoplasmosis
- Congenital toxoplasmosis
