Celiac disease is usually caused by:
- Autoantibodies against gluten which is found in:
- Wheat
- Barley
- Rye
Genetic Causes
- Celiac disease is linked to the HLA genes usually HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8.

- Non-HLA genes are also thought to be related to celiac disease:
- CELIAC2 (5q31-33)
- CELIAC3 (2q33)
- CELIAC4 (19p13·1)
