Overview
There are no established measures for the primary prevention of short bowel syndrome. However, treating underlying causes including Crohn's disease and malignancies might prevent short bowel syndrome.
Primary Prevention
- There are no established measures for the primary prevention of short bowel syndrome.[1]
- Treating Crohn's disease promptly might prevent further complications. However, despite effective treatment, many patients with Crohn's disease will undergo bowel resection.[2]
- Since the length of remaining bowel is the most powerful predictor of short bowel syndrome, a surgeon must consider bowel resection length as short as possible.[3][4]
