Overview
Oxidative stress, hormonal imbalances, endotoxemia and mitochondrial abnormalities may all be potential causes. It can be caused by some medications, and it is referred to as secondary NAFLD.
Causes
- Common causes in the development of NAFLD is related to obesity which will result in insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.[1][2]It is estimated that approximately 80% of the obese people suffer from NAFLD.[3]
- Patients who are having type 2 diabetes mellitus are more prone to develop Nafld[4][5]
- Less commonly Patients with hypertension and dyslipidemia are also associated with developing NAFLD
Secondary causes
NAFLD can also be caused by the following medications (termed secondary NAFLD):
- Amiodarone
- Antiviral drugs (nucleoside analogues)
- Aspirin / NSAIDS
- Corticosteroids
- Methotrexate
- Nifedipine
- Perhexiline
- Tamoxifen
- Tetracycline
- Valproic acid
- Viral Hepatitis.
- Rapid weight loss.
- Malnutrition.
- High levels of triglyceride in blood.
- Sleep apnea.
- Hypothyroidism
- Hypopituitarism .
