Other Imaging Findings

• Electroencephalography may be helpful in the diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy. Findings on an electroencephalography suggestive of hepatic encephalopathy include:
  • Reduced frequency in the posterior derivations
  • Increase in interhemispheric parietal relative coherence within the theta band

These findings can be seen in patients with Child class C and in patients with a history of overt hepatic encephalopathy; they correlated with hyperammonemia and hyponatremia.

• Alterations in the EEG are significantly associated with the severity of liver disease and hepatic encephalopathy In patients with cirrhosis.

• the EEG is also helpful in the determining prognosis of patients with liver disease and hepatic encephalopathy.
