Gallbladder cancer pathophysiology

Overview

It is thought that gallbladder cancer is the result of chronic irritation of the gallbladder mucosa over a duration of years may predispose to malignant transformation.

Pathophysiology

  • It is understood that gallbladder cancer is the result of two different independent biological pathways
    • 1) The most common pathway is a dysplasia-carcinoma which is arising from metaplastic epithelium. It's a process that would require a period of approximately 10 years to devlop.[1]
    • 2) the second most common pathway is an adenoma-carcinoma sequence.[2]
