Overview
Other Diagnostic Studies
Other diagnostic studies for ileus include enteroclysis. Enteroclysis is used when abdominal x ray and CT scan are inconclusive but patient is suspected of underlying ileus.
- In enteroclysis, contrast material is used to observe the movements of intestine.
- Most commonly water-soluble radio-opaque contrast material such as Gastrografin is used.
- Enteroclysis is also more accurate in identifying the mucosal histology of small bowel.
- It can help in differentiating ileus from small bowel obstruction.
- Enteroclysis can also help in identifying the severity and patency of intestine in case of mechanical obstruction.
