Overview
There are no x-ray findings associated with anal fistula.
X Ray
- Fistulography is used to diagnose anal fistula in the past.
- Fistulography is painful and invasive procedure so it is replaced by MRI nowadays.
- This is used to find out the anatomy of fistulas
Procedure:
- A fine cannula is catheterized through the external opening and a water-soluble contrast agent is injected to find out the fistulous track
Drawbacks of fistulography:
- It is very difficult to assess fistula with multiple tracts due to the filling defect with contrast material.
- Fistulography is not used to visualize the anal sphincter.
