Overview
Other diagnostic studies for polycythemia vera include bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsy.[1]
Other diagnostic studies
Other diagnostic studies for polycythemia vera include:
- Bone marrow aspiration: This is an invasive diagnostic procedure that is sometimes required for the diagnosis of polycythemia vera. Bone marrow biopsy usually shows high proportions of leukocytes, erythrocytes, and thrombocytes. This is referred to as panmyelosis. These findings on a bone marrow biopsy constitute one of the major diagnostic criteria for polycythemia vera in the 2016 WHO classification of myeloproliferative neoplasms.[2]
- Erythropoietin level: Erythropoietin level is usually low in polycythemia vera. This is because polycythemia vera is characterized by autonomous production of red blood cells in an erythropoietin-independent manner.

Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. After a small area of skin is numbed, a Jamshidi needle (a long, hollow needle) is inserted into the patient’s hip bone. Samples of blood, bone, and bone marrow are removed for examination under a microscope.[3]
