Overview
MRI is considering as the main diagnosis modality in selected patients and can be a method for problem-solving issues regarding breast symptoms.Breast MRI has some indications and does not use regularly.Breast MRI is not proper modality for diagnosis of breast lumps and does not provide additional findings to ultrasound and mammographic results and has both false-positive and false-negetive results.
MRI
MRI is considering as the main diagnosis modality in selected patients. Moreover, breast MRI can be a method for problem-solving issues regarding breast symptoms. [1][2]
Indications of breast MRI:
- Restricted mammographic findings due to breast augmentation resulting from silicon, saline implants and silicone injection.
- Determining of breast cancer invasion to pectoralis major, serratus anterior and intercostal muscles.
- Further evaluation for breast lumps beside examination, mammographic and sonographic findings.
- Evaluation of contralateral breast in patients with breast carcinoma.
- Screening method for asymptomatic and high risk patients.
- Determining patients' response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in comparison to previous, during and after imaging findings.
- Derermining residual disease after lumpectomy in individuals with positive margin.
Breast MRI is not proper modality for diagnosis of breast lumps and does not provide additional findings to ultrasound and mammographic results. Also false-positive findings of breast MRI may bring into unnecessary biopsies. False-negetive findings of breast MRI requires follow-up evaluation regarding ultrasound and mammographic features. [3]
