Overview
Besides MRI, thallium single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans have been studied as a diagnostic tool to distinguish between PCNSL and cerebral toxoplasmosis. It was expected that lymphoma cells with a high metabolism would accumulate more thallium than infected, inflamed or normal tissue. Initial thallium SPECT studies showed very high sensitivity and specificity of increased thallium uptake for PCNSL versus cerebral toxoplasmosis in HIV patients.
