CT Scan
CT scan is done to mainly detect
- Extent of disease. Its very much useful in cases of lesions of oral cavity , tongue, esophagus.
- Metastatis to regional lymph nodes can be assessed.
- Perineural invasion in lesions near the nerves especially in oral cavity, nasopharyngeal tumors.
Accuracy of nodal staging with CT scan is fairly good compared to clinical staging, helping in deciding treatment modalities.
Advantages:
- CT is less expensive than MRI.
- CT is more sensitive in finding involvement of bones, cartilages.
- Safer for patients with implants.
Disadvantages
- Exposure to radiation is main concern.
- Less sensitive for soft tissue involvement.[1]
