- In the acute stage:
- Peripheral blood smears shows anisomacrocytosis with many bacilli adherent to red blood cells.
- Thrombocytopenia is also seen and can be very severe.
- In the chronic stage:
- Silver stain (the Warthin–Starry method) of skin nodules
