Historical Perspective
Recent evidence suggests that the different thymic epithelial populations all develop from a common thymic epithelial stem cell of endodermal origin. Not as assumed before that thymic epithelial cells originate from both the ectodermal and endodermal germ cell layers. This concept does not exclude the occurrence of more differentiated “committed stem cells” with medullary, cortical or other phenotypes. The different types of thymomas develop from the thymic epithelium.[1]
