Classification
An epidural abscess is an suppurative infection of the central nervous system, a collection of pus localised in the epidural space lying outside the dura mater. It will be classified, according to its location, in intracranial and spinal epidural abscess. In the first case, the abscess will be limited on the inner side by the cranial dura mater and on the outer side by the cranial bone; on the second case, the abscess will be limited on the inner side by the spinal dura mater and on the outer side, by the vertebral bones.
