Other Diagnostic Studies

PCR

Polymerase chain reaction is used to detect DNA of Legionella in urine, blood and bronchoalveolar lavage samples.

PCR is an alternative tool for rapid Legionella detection in environmental water. The detection rate of Legionella DNA by qualitative PCR is usually high, at >90% of positive samples.

Bronchoalveolar Lavage

In pediatric patients, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples can be used for cultures and PCR.

Thoracocentesis

Thoracocentesis is performed when significant amount of pleural effusion is present.
