Overview
Paraganglioma may be classified into several subtypes based on the site of origin and presence of neural cell line.
Classification
According to the World Health Organization, paragangliomas are classified based on the presence of neural cell line. In the categorization proposed by Wick, the paragangliomas belong to Group II.
Paragangliomas are also described by their site of origin and are often given special names:
- Carotid paragangliomas
- Glomus tympanicum and Glomus jugulare paragangliomas
- Vagal paragangliomas
- Other sites, such as larynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, thyroid gland, thoracic inlet, as well as the bladder in extremely rare cases.
