Overview
Medulloblastoma may be classified into several subtypes based on WHO histological classification criteria (classic vs variant medulloblastoma) and the molecular subtypes classification criteria (WNT subgroup vs SHH subgroup vs Group 3 medulloblastoma vs Group 4 medulloblastoma).[1][2][3][4][5]
Classification
WHO histological classification criteria
- Medulloblastoma may be classified into two subtypes based on WHO histological classification criteria which include classic medulloblastoma and variant medulloblastoma.
- Other variants of medulloblastoma include desmoplastic medulloblastoma, large cell medulloblastoma, anaplastic medulloblastoma and medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity.[4][5][2]

Molecular classification criteria
- Medulloblastoma may be classified into at least four major subtypes based on molecular classification criteria which include WNT subgroup, SHH subgroup, Group C and Group D medulloblastoma.[1][3]

Risk stratification criteria
- Medulloblastoma may be stratified based on the patient age, tumor stage, and the extent of any previous surgical excision into either a standard (average) risk group or a high risk group.
- The risk stratification criteria may help predict the treatment protocol that should be used for medulloblastoma patients.
