There are no established risk factors for optic nerve gliomas.

Risk Factors

There are no established risk factors for optic nerve gliomas. Most optic gliomas are slow-growing and noncancerous (benign) and occur in children, almost always before age 20. There is a strong association between optic glioma and neurofibromatosis type 1. Optic nerve glioma occurs in about fifteen percent of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1.
