Overview
The main causes of cardiac myxoma remain unknown.[1][2] However, in some cases like inherited myxomatosis there is a strong relation with genetic mutations of PRKAR1A gene.
Causes
There are no established causes for cardiac myxoma. However, right atrial myxomas may be associated with tricuspid stenosis and atrial fibrillation. In addition, about 10% of myxomas are passed down through families (inherited). Such tumors are called familial myxomas they tend to occur in more than one part of the heart at a time, and often cause symptoms at a younger age than other myxomas.[3] Inherited myxomatosis is caused by a mutation in the PRKAR1A gene.
