Overview

Chondromas may be classified into two broad types based on their location into enchondromas (tumor grows within the bone and expands it) and ecchondroma (tumor grows outward from the bone).

Classification

• Chondromas may be classified into two broad types based on their location:
  • Enchondroma (tumor grows within the bone and expands it)
  • Ecchondroma (tumor grows outward from the bone) (for example, juxtacortical chondroma)
• Most common sites are within the medullary canal of the bone (enchondroma) and periosteum of the tubular bones (juxtacortical chondroma).
• Less common types of chondromas, based on their anatomical locations may include:
  • Patellar chondroma
  • Chondroma of tip of the nose
  • Extraskeletal chondroma of the scalp
  • Intracranial chordoma
  • Sacrococcygeal chordoma
  • Skull base chordoma
  • Spinal chordoma
