Overview

In cases of abdominal pain suspected to be appendicitis, imaging diagnostic methods are more cost-effective than physical exams to make accurate diagnostic decisions. Abdominal tomographies and CT scans are the most commonly used tools.

Cost-Effectiveness of Therapy

  • For patients in prepaid systems, an abdominal tomography is the most cost-effective strategy to use, with a ratio of approximately $965/diagnosed patient.
  • For patients in public system, the abdominal tomography was also the most cost-effective strategy to use, with a ratio of approximately $492/diagnosed patient.[1]
  • CT scans are being used with increasing frequency due to their specificity and literature, suggesting further cost-effectiveness.[2]
