Overview
History
A detailed and thorough history from the patient is necessary. Specific areas of focus when obtaining a history from the patient include:
- Symptom duration (Chronic course with intermittent exacerbations and eruptions)
- History of smoking, allergens, contact lenses, and use ofretinoids (may provoke or exacerbate symptoms)
- History of Seborrheic dermatitis (associated with symptoms of scalp itching, flaking, and oily skin).
- History of Rosacea (associated with a red and swollen nose (rhinophyma), facial flushing, broken and distended vessels in the face, pustules, oily skin, food and environmental intolerances, and eye irritation)
- History of acne or eczema
Symptoms
Symptoms of blepharitis may include the following:
- Red eye
- Red, swollen eyelids
- Itchy eyelids
- Excessive tearing
- Gritty sensation
- Burning sensation
- Crusting or matting of eyelashes in the morning
- Flaking or scaling of the eyelid skin
- Light sensitivity
- Blurred vision
- Facial flushing,
- Broken and distended vessels in the face
- Scalp itching
- Oily skin
