Overview
Gastritis is inflammation of the lining of the stomach.
Historical Perspective
Classification
Gastritis may be classified according to chronicity, into two categories: acute and chronic. Gastritis may also be classified by pathology/pathophysiology into subtypes by proposed classification systems such as the updated Sydney system or the Operative Link for Gastritis Assessment [OLGA] staging system.[1]

Differentiating Gastritis from other Diseases
Gastritis must be differentiated from peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gastroenteritis, and Crohn's disease.
