Celiac disease is usually caused by:

  • Autoantibodies against gluten which is found in:
    • Wheat
    • Barley
    • Rye

Genetic Causes

  • Celiac disease is linked to the HLA genes usually HLA DQ2 and HLA DQ8.
    • COELIAC1 (6p21)
  • Non HLA Genes are also thought to be related to celiac disease:
    • COELIAC2 (5q31-33)
    • COELIAC3 (2q33)
    • COELIAC4 (19p13·1)
