- Mycoplasma pneumoniae (bacterial pneumonia)
- Rubella
- Transverse myelitis also may occur as a complication of
- Medication: Sulfasalazine
- Lyme disease
- Measles
- Syphilis
- Vaccinations (including those for chickenpox and rabies)
- Varicella zoster (the virus that causes chickenpox and shingles)
