Overview
Other Imaging Findings
- The diagnosis of esophageal perforationshould be confirmed by water-soluble contrast esophagram (Gastrograffin), which reveals the location and extent of extravasation of contrast material. If the water-soluble study is negative, a barium study should be performed for better definition.[1] [2]
- Barium esophagram can detect 60% of cervical perforations and 90% of intrathoracic perforations.
- Endoscopy is not commonly used to aid in diagnosis of Boerhaave syndrome.
