Historical Perspective
- Boerhaave first described the spontaneous transmural esophageal perforation in 1724 by the physician Herman Boerhaave. It usually occurs after forceful vomiting.
- Barrett described the first successful surgical repair of the esophagus in 1947. Prior to this, Boerhaave syndrome had virtually 100% mortality.
