History and Symptoms
History
Obtaining a history gives important information in making a diagnosis of ileus. It provides insight into the cause, precipitating factors, and associated comorbid conditions. A complete history will help determine the correct therapy and helps in determining the prognosis. The areas of focus should be on onset, duration, and progression of symptoms such as:
- Abdominal pain, distension and fullness
- Bloating or flatulence
- Appetite changes
- Nausea & vomitting
- Past medical history (such as cirrhosis, pneumonia, renal failure).
- Previous history of thyroid disease
- Current medications
Symptoms
Symptoms of ileus include, but are not limited to:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Postprandial abdominal discomfort
- Feeding intolerance
- Abdominal distension
- Constipation
- Flatulence
- Belching
obstipation (severe constipation with no passage of stool or flatus) discomfort and abdominal cramping
