Epidemiology and Demographics
Incidence
- The annual incidence of esophageal food impaction is 25 per 100,000 persons per year.[1][2]
- The incidence is higher in males as compared to females.
- The incidence progressively increases with age, reaching the peak around seventh decade of life.
Age
- Swallowing disorders can occur in all age groups, resulting from congenital abnormalities, structural damage, and/or medical conditions.[3]
- Swallowing problems are a common complaint among older individuals, and the incidence of dysphagia is higher in the elderly,[4]
- In patients who have had strokes,[5] and in patients who are admitted to acute care hospitals or chronic care facilities.
