Overview

The word ileus has been derived from the word είλειν which means to twist. είλειν lso gave rise to the section of the bowel termed the "ileum".
In 1654, Thomas Bartholin was the first to describe a case of gallstone ileus in a necroscopy study.
In 1958, Robertson, Eddy, and Vosseler were the first to describe a case of adynamic ileus associated with cecal perforation.
