The most potent risk factor in the development of neurosyphilis is untreated syphilis infection. Neurosyphilis is a complication of late or tertiary syphilis infection. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infectious disease. The infection damages the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous tissue.
